WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW. . .
MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GARY:

Rotarians,

I hope you are well and continue to be safe. I would like to thank Linda and Bruce Spear for hosting such an interesting and interactive Happy Hour on July 29. We had a small crowd, but we had a very lively discussion about the many ways we can improve our Club.

It was also great to see Honorary Rotarian David Lee, who was very engaged in our discussion. We are looking forward to seeing David in our upcoming meetings.

In that light, we have many interesting programs lined up for the next two months, which I think you will enjoy. Please plan to put them on your calendar.

These programs are in addition to a brief Board Meeting on August 5 at the end of meeting to discuss charitable funding from our Foundation and COVID-19 funds.

If you have a request, please be prepared to provide the Board with the amount of your request and reasons for funding the organization.

Also, Linda Spear and Susan Van Dyke have been working hard to update last year’s survey to engage all members in ways we can improve our Club, especially regarding programs, projects, fund-raising activities and other ways our Club can better serve the community and participate and engage our members.

Susan is planning to send the survey to all Rotarians by the second week of August and will describe ways to return to the survey. Thank you, Susan and Linda, for your dedication to our Club and for your hard work. We look forward to your responses to the survey.

The following is our line-up of speakers for August and early September. We look forward to seeing you on Zoom and hope you will bring your friends or colleagues to these informative sessions, who may be interested in joining our Club:

(1) August 5 -  David Woodland, Rotary president-elect of the Summit County Club and immunologist, will be giving a presentation on “The Science Behind Pandemics.” David “Woody,” who has a Ph.D. in immunology, served for decades as an independent researcher, studying the immune response to respiratory pathogens. Woody also served on the National Science Advisory Board for BioSecurity (CNSABB). Many have given praise to his presentation, which he has given to other  district Rotary Clubs. I believe you will enjoy his presentation and learn a great deal about this terrible pandemic.

(2) August 12 - David Carroll, Executive Director for the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce, will be speaking to the Club about the business community in Englewood and the types of new commercial and independent businesses we will be seeing in Englewood in the near future. This will be a program you can’t miss!

(3) August 19 - District Governor Bob Kemp will be attending our Club to talk about the state of Rotary District 5450 and current activities and challenges that are taking place in our Clubs. Governor Bob will give us an inspiring presentation on how we can become better Rotarians, and we are honored that he will be at our Zoom meeting.

(4) August 26 -  Happy Hour via Zoom

(5) September 2 - Reeves Brown, the former head of the Department of Local Affairs under then-Governor John Hickenlooper, and a leader in Colorado for many years, will be speaking about his organization “Building a Better Colorado.” Reeves will be speaking about the Gallagher Amendment and other ballot issues in the upcoming election from a non-partisan viewpoint.

(6) September 9 - I am working with Beth Loewen, a representative from the Englewood program “Be a Tool Neighbor,”  which has been working to support neighborhood improvements, especially for those who have not been able to accomplish many tasks, or  take care of their property. The “Be a Tool Neighbor” is an organization that has been working closely with the City and many area churches to improve the lives of our residents.  The program was suggested by Frank Sargent and Sandy Algermissen, who attended a Golden Rotary meeting, where the Englewood organization gave a presentation. The organization of volunteers has a service day scheduled in Englewood for Saturday, September 5th, which may be of interest to our Club, but many final details are still being put together.

We have a very active month, and I hope you will be able to attend our upcoming meetings. Also, if you are on our  Board of Directors, please plan for a brief Board meeting at the end of next week’s meeting, August 5. Also, plan to  fill out your Club survey when you receive it.

I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming meetings!

-- Co-President Gary
