$90,000! We awarded a lot of scholarships!
We awarded $90,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors of Englewood’s two high schools this year. The amount is the largest ever given by the club, with nine students receiving $10,000 each.
Josh Staller is the president of the Englewood Rotary Foundation and chair of its scholarship committee. “With the rising cost of attending college, we wanted to give more than ever before to help meet the needs of Englewood students,” Staller said.
“Note that all of our recipients this year have chosen to attend in-state schools, and there is no doubt that the cost of higher education was a significant factor in their decisions.”
The scholarship winners and their chosen colleges are: Dante Lopez Peralta, Metropolitan State University of Denver; Edwin Ruiz, University of Colorado: Boulder; Alexander Perez Govea, University of Colorado: Boulder; Hector Ramirez, Arapahoe Community College; Olivia Alvarenga, University of Colorado: Boulder; Jozette Echeverria-Gallegos, Colorado Mesa University; Leilana Phanekham,
University of Colorado: Boulder, Noah Painter, Colorado State University; Layla Loredo, Arapahoe Community College.
Staller said, “The scholarship applicants this year were remarkably well prepared. Their personal essays eloquently stated their career goals, and they showed exceptional poise in their face-to-face interviews with us. All of our applicants were great students, and it was a difficult choice to select only nine of them for scholarship awards.”
Englewood Rotary has given scholarships to local students every year since 1972.
We volunteered!
It was Rotary's Epic Day of Service – when clubs throughout our Rotary district, the country and even elsewhere in the world went into our communities and served.
Our club volunteered at Movement 5280, which is a fabulous organization that helps young people who are homeless or at risk of being unhoused. They have so many programs to help.
Three of us (including a member's son and granddaughter) were in the kitchen, concocting a chicken casserole for 80 people! Movement 5280 draws a big crowd on Sundays for its church service and, that week, its chicken casserole.
Three more were in the art room, organizing materials. And two of us helped sort donated books for the library.
It was an Epic Day of Service. And a lot of fun!
